About

A small studio for patterns worth noticing.

LayoutLab is an independent design studio in Utrecht, the Netherlands. It makes printable wall art, calendars, planners and party games, sold as digital downloads through Etsy.

A story in the numbers

A daylight print uses real day lengths. The tide print follows real tidal constituents. A snow crystal is grown with the rules that frost follows. The numbers stay in the background; what you see is a calm image you can live with, and every product page explains what you are looking at.

How a print is made

  1. Observe

Start with something real: a season, a tide table, the structure of a leaf, the path of the sun.

  2. Translate

Turn that system into rules, and the rules into shapes, drawn in code.

  3. Refine

Choose the palette, the composition and the details, and review every final piece.

  4. Prepare

Make files that print sharply at home or at a print shop, in standard frame sizes.

Close-up of the sunflower from Golden Angle: seeds spiralling outwards, each placed 137.5 degrees from the one before
Golden Angle: every seed 137.5° from the one before.
Close-up of 2027, A Year of Moons: rows of small moons in their real phases on midnight blue
2027, A Year of Moons: each moon in its real phase.
Close-up of Tide Month: rows of slate and sand bands showing high and low water through each day
Tide Month: one row per day, low water dark and high water pale.

The photos

The room photos on this site and on Etsy are mockups: the prints are placed in a rendered interior so you can judge size and colour. Frames and furniture are not included.
